We were possessed by rock and roll music and, to feel fulfilled, had to go out and play gigs the rest of our lives. It’s something you’re always going to do.
You can quit, but it’s really like the sailor and the sea- if he never goes back, he’s just going to think about it for the rest of his life, be suspended in a state of longing.
I don’t think it will ever stop.

Maybe the best singer in the world. The more believable singing is the better. In fact, that’s the only thing that matters- believability-and George Jones has it.

I enjoy girls immensely, and I think they’re part of what a rock concert should be. Whenever I go to a punk show and it’s all boys on the dance floor, I think, ‘Hey, there’s something missing here. Where’s the sex?

When I write, I can’t say something I don’t really feel. I really have to feel it and the riff or the lyric or the phrasing has to fit. It all has to fit together and it has to be simple so it is direct and retains its conviction. I can sing a song like ‘Fooled Again’ with conviction because I know what that lyric is about and why I wrote it. It will never lose its edge for me because I know how I felt when I wrote that lyric and when I sing it I still feel it. I just couldn’t do it any other way. That would be dishonest to me and one thing rock and roll has always had going for it is its honesty. That’s what rock and roll is — honesty — and I have to tell the truth.

We enjoy playing with each other, which I think is a pretty important part of this. If we didn’t, we’d have given it up a long time ago. The idea when we started was to take five people and keep ‘em together no matter what and see what we could get out of it, and we’ve pretty much stuck to that plan.

I don’t know if I ever feel good about anything. I’m too neurotic about that. I tend to find something wrong about everything. I think we’re all in the great wide open. I really want to like the world, but I also have to address what I see in it. Life is wild, you know?
